Longtermism – The Basic Assumptions

Writer's picture: Steve MartinSteve Martin

The philosophy of Longtermism is based on three basic ideas:

  1. Future people matter. Most people think that our lives matter as much as the lives of those who lived thousands of years ago. If that is the case, shouldn’t the lives of people who will live hundreds or thousands of years in the future matter as much as our own?

  2. The future could be huge! Unless we experience a catastrophe, the vast majority of people who will ever live have not been born yet.

  3. Our actions today quite possibly can predictably influence how well the very long-term future plays out. In sum, it may be our responsibility to ensure future generations get to survive and flourish.

If this makes sense to you, you may want to think about joining this movement.
